10 THINGS GIRLS SHOULD DO FOR THEIR FATHERS
Note: this is from a single girl’s perspective. I am well aware some things change after you marry.
1 | UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR EARTHLY FATHER AND HEAVENLY FATHER.
As girls, we tend to mold God into the image of our father without thinking. If we have a good father, God seems good. If we have a bad father, God is harsh, cruel, or what not. No matter what our earthy father is like, we need to make sure that we do not confuse the traits of one father with the Other.
2 | HONOR YOUR FATHER.
While we are children, we are called to obey our parents. However, no matter how old we are, not matter where we live, we are to honor our father no matter what. Notice that the Bible did not give an escape clause if your father is a bad father.
3 | SPEAK WELL OF YOUR FATHER.
This ties in with honoring your father. Yes, your father is a flawed human (so is mine), but we should not broadcast to the world all his failings. When you speak of your father, speak with respect and talk of the good things he has done. If you have nothing good to say, perhaps it is best to keep silent*.
4 | ASK HIS ADVICE.
A father is supposed to be the leader of the family. To honor that position, take decisions you are trying to make to your father for advice or approval.
5 | THANK HIM FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE.
Your father, I am sure, has done a lot for you. Take the time to thank him for what he has done. Remind him of the times he has helped you.
6 | FORGIVE YOUR FATHER FOR HIS WRONGS.
As we get older, many of us see the mistakes our parents made. Some of those mistakes were large, but God does not want us to become bitter over it. Forgive your father for the mistakes he made, both large and small.
7 | DON’T FORGET FATHER’S DAY.
You don’t have to buy a five dollar card; just send your father a note, make him a special meal, or travel to see him. Celebrate with the man who has been a father to you along with the rest of the nation. If you would rather, do this on his birthday.
8 | SHARE WITH YOUR FATHER.
While it depends on the family, I know that in mine, the girls go to our mom with their problems. Sharing with my father is a blessing to both of us. It is another way of submitting and showing respect to him as the leader of the house. Sharing what is in my heart is a good way of building that bond. You might also benefit from getting the male perspective on an issue.
9 | COOK HIS FAVORITE MEAL.
A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (or so they say), so this is a great way to show your love to your father.
10 | PRAY FOR YOUR FATHER.
He has a tough job in this day in age. We need to cover him in prayer. Maybe your father isn’t living up to his responsibility; that is even more reason to pray.
